Thermal field variation

The IRDAM weather stations are high technology equivalent of the traditional rifleman's wet finger held to the wind.
The IRDAM Sensing element is a vertical cylinder. This cylinder is centrally heated and kept at a constant
Dt above the ambient temperature. This set-up  produces a THERMAL FIELD around the cylinder.

WIND SPEED

The wind cools off the cylinder. To keep the differential temperature, energy must be injected into the cylinder.
The amount of injected energy is a function of wind speed.
Computed wind speed is corrected in function of atmospheric pressure and temperature. The result is real wind speed.

WIND DIRECTION

At wind speed zero, the thermal field is circular with its centre on the axis of the cylinder.
When the wind is blowing, the thermal field gets distorted into a parabola.
The microprocessor determines the parameters of the parabola and figures out the wind direction.
